Moving from Wix to WordPress without losing rankings

Moving from Wix or Squarespace to WordPress gives you more control and room to grow. The risk is losing rankings if old page addresses stop working. Plan the move so every old page points to its new home.

Before you start

  1. List every page on your current site, with its address.
  2. Check Search Console to see which pages get clicks from Google.
  3. Copy your content, images and form settings. Builders like Wix don't offer a full export, so expect some manual copying.
  4. Check who controls your domain. If you bought it through the builder, you'll need to transfer it or point it elsewhere.

Build the new site

  • Rebuild your pages on WordPress, improving the content as you go.
  • Keep page addresses the same where possible.
  • Build it on a staging address first so the old site stays live.

Launch

  1. Set up 301 redirects from every old address that changes to its new address.
  2. Point the domain to your new host.
  3. Check the site isn't blocking search engines.
  4. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console.
  5. Update the website link on your Business Profile and directories if it changed.

After launch

Watch Search Console for "not found" errors over the next few weeks and redirect any you missed. Some ranking movement in the first weeks is normal.
