How to do SEO for your own small business

You can do a lot of SEO yourself if you can spare two to three hours a week. Focus on your Google Business Profile, a page for each service, and reviews. Those three things do most of the work for a local business.

Week 1: Get the foundations right

  1. Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
  2. Complete your Google Business Profile using our checklist.
  3. Write down the 10 searches you most want to appear for, for example "switchboard upgrade Joondalup".

Weeks 2 to 6: Build your pages

  1. Make sure each main service has its own page with a clear title, such as "Switchboard Upgrades in Joondalup".
  2. Write at least 300 words on each page answering what customers ask: price range, how long it takes, what's included.
  3. Add photos of real jobs and a clear call or quote button.
  4. Add pages for your priority suburbs, with genuinely local details.

Every week after that

  • Ask every customer for a Google review.
  • Add a few new photos to your profile.
  • Answer one common customer question as a short article each month.

Every month

  • Check Search Console to see which searches bring visits.
  • Search your main keywords from a few suburbs to check map-pack positions.

When DIY stops working

If you've done the basics for three months and competitors still outrank you, the gap is usually links, technical issues or the depth of content. That's where professional help pays off. See our local SEO plans, or request a free audit and we'll show you what's holding you back.
