Ecommerce SEO: a starter guide for Shopify and WooCommerce stores

Ecommerce SEO is mostly about collection (category) pages and product pages. Shoppers search for types of products far more often than for individual items, so collection pages usually bring the most traffic.

Collection pages first

  • One collection for each way people search: by product type, use, material or audience.
  • A short, useful intro above or below the products: who it's for, how to choose, sizing.
  • Clear titles like "Women's running tights" rather than "Collection 3".

Product pages

  • Write your own descriptions. Manufacturer copy is duplicated across hundreds of stores.
  • Include sizes, materials, care instructions, shipping times and returns.
  • Use real photos with descriptive file names and alt text.
  • Show reviews where you can.

Technical basics

  • Fast pages, especially on mobile. See website speed.
  • One version of each product URL. Shopify and WooCommerce handle most of this, but filters and tags can create duplicates.
  • Out-of-stock products: keep the page live if it's coming back, and redirect it if it's gone for good.
  • Submit your sitemap in Search Console.

Content that sells

Buying guides and comparisons ("how to choose…", "X vs Y") bring in shoppers early and link through to collections.
