How to transfer or claim ownership of a Google Business Profile

If a former employee, web designer or agency set up your Business Profile, they may still own it. You can get it back by having them transfer ownership, or by requesting access through Google if they don't respond.

If you can contact the current owner

  1. Ask them to open the profile's settings and go to people and access.
  2. They add your Google account and give it the Owner role.
  3. Accept the invitation from your email.
  4. Once you're an owner, they can remove themselves, or you can remove them.

If the owner won't respond

  1. Search for your business on Google Maps and choose to claim or request access to the profile.
  2. Fill in the request form. Google contacts the current owner.
  3. If they don't respond within Google's time limit, you may be offered the option to verify the profile yourself.

Prevent it happening again

  • Always keep yourself as the primary owner, using a Google account the business controls.
  • Give agencies and staff the Manager role, not Owner.
  • Remove people when they leave.

Ranktide always sets profiles up under the client's own account as owner. See our Business Profile service, or read how to verify a profile.
