Starting your own trade business means sorting out the paperwork, protecting yourself, and finding your first customers. Here's the order most tradies tackle it in. Requirements vary by trade and state, so check the official sources for yours.
1. The basics
- ABN: apply through the Australian Business Register.
- Business name: register it with ASIC if you trade under anything other than your own name.
- GST: you must register once your turnover reaches the GST threshold, currently $75,000 a year. Check the ATO for current rules.
- Structure: sole trader, partnership, company or trust. Talk to an accountant.
2. Licences and registration
Many trades need a contractor licence or registration to work for customers, as well as your trade qualification. In WA, check Building and Energy WA.
3. Insurance
- Public liability insurance.
- Workers' compensation if you employ anyone.
- Tools, vehicle and income protection, as needed.
4. Systems
- A separate business bank account.
- Accounting software.
- A job management and quoting app.
5. Your first customers
- Tell everyone you know, and past employers' customers where that's allowed.
- Set up your Google Business Profile.
- Get a simple website with your services and service area. See do I need a website.
- Ask every customer for a review from day one.
