Should tradies show prices on their website?

Most tradies worry that showing prices will scare customers off or tip off competitors. In practice, some price guidance usually brings better enquiries, because people who can't afford you stop calling and people who can are more ready to book.

Why price guidance helps

  • Customers search for prices before they search for a tradie. "How much does X cost" is one of the most common searches in every trade.
  • A price range filters out enquiries that were never going to go ahead.
  • It builds trust. Hiding prices makes people assume you're expensive.

How to show prices without locking yourself in

  1. Ranges, not fixed prices: "Most switchboard upgrades cost between $X and $Y."
  2. "From" prices for standard jobs.
  3. Explain what changes the price: access, size, materials, condition.
  4. Fixed prices for simple, repeatable jobs, such as a smoke alarm check or a standard service.
  5. Your call-out fee or minimum charge, stated plainly.

When not to show prices

Large custom jobs, such as a full renovation, vary too much for a range to mean anything. Explain your quoting process instead, and show examples of past projects with a rough budget band.

Ranktide practises what it preaches: see our published pricing. For more ideas, read how to write a quote that wins jobs.
