A sudden traffic drop is worrying, but the cause is often simpler than a Google penalty. Work through the possibilities in order, starting with whether the drop is real.
1. Is the drop real?
- Check whether your analytics code was removed or changed during a site update.
- Compare Google Analytics with Search Console clicks. If Search Console is steady, it's probably a tracking problem.
2. Is it seasonal?
Compare with the same period last year. Many trades have quiet months, and Christmas and January often dip.
3. Did something change on your site?
- A redesign or platform move without redirects.
- Pages deleted or their addresses changed.
- The site blocked from search engines by accident.
- Slow loading or errors. Check Search Console's Pages report.
4. Which pages and searches dropped?
In Search Console, compare date ranges and look at the pages and queries tab. A drop on one page points to a page problem; a drop everywhere points to a site-wide issue or a Google update.
5. Google updates and competitors
Google regularly updates how it ranks pages. If your drop lines up with an announced update, focus on making your most important pages more useful. Also check whether a competitor has started outranking you.
6. Security
Look for security warnings in Search Console. See WordPress security and Google penalties explained.
