Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the free tool that shows how people find and use your website. It replaced the old Universal Analytics, which stopped processing data in July 2023. Most small businesses only need a handful of its reports.
Setup basics
- Create a GA4 property at analytics.google.com and add the tag to every page of your site.
- Set your time zone and currency to Australian.
- Link it to Search Console.
- Mark enquiries as key events: form submissions, phone clicks and quote requests. See click-to-call and call tracking.
The reports worth checking monthly
- Traffic acquisition: how many visits came from organic search, Google Business Profile, ads, social and direct.
- Pages and screens: which pages people visit most.
- Key events: how many enquiries you got and from which channel.
- Landing pages: which pages bring people in from Google.
Track your Business Profile visits
Add a tracked link to your Business Profile website field (for example, with utm_source=google and utm_medium=organic and utm_campaign=gbp in the address) so profile visits show separately.
Don't overthink it
Enquiries are the number that matters. If visits go up but enquiries don't, look at conversion rate before spending more on traffic.
