Google used to let businesses create a simple free website from their Business Profile. It shut those websites down in March 2024. If your profile still links to one, or you're wondering why the option disappeared, here's what to do.
What happened
Google announced that websites made with Business Profiles would be turned off in March 2024. For a short period afterwards, visitors were redirected to the business's profile, and then the old addresses stopped working. See Search Engine Journal's report.
If you relied on one
- Check the website link on your Business Profile. Remove any old Business Profile website address.
- Check your business cards, signage and directory listings for the old address.
- Get a proper website on your own domain, so it can't be switched off by someone else.
Your options now
- DIY builders such as Wix or Squarespace, if you're happy to build it yourself.
- WordPress on your own hosting, for the most control and room to grow.
- A professionally built site, if you want it done properly and quickly.
Your Business Profile still works on its own, but a website lets you rank for many more searches. See do I need a website and choosing a .com.au domain.
