How to tell which marketing is actually working

Most small businesses can't say which marketing brings their best jobs. A simple tracking habit fixes that, and it usually shows that one or two channels do most of the work.

Track every enquiry

Keep a simple spreadsheet, or use your job management app, with:

  • Date
  • Name and suburb
  • Where they found you
  • Job type
  • Quoted value
  • Won or lost

Ask the question

"How did you find us?" on every call. Give options if people aren't sure: Google search, Google Maps, a referral, Facebook, the van, a lead site.

Back it up with data

  • Business Profile: calls and website clicks. See profile performance.
  • Google Analytics: form submissions and phone link taps.
  • Call tracking numbers for ads or print. See call tracking.

Work out the return

  1. Add up the value of jobs won from each channel in a month.
  2. Subtract what that channel cost.
  3. Compare channels, and look at the trend over several months, not one.

SEO is slow to start, so judge it over six months or more. See how to read an SEO report.
