LocalBusiness schema markup: a simple guide

Schema markup is code that tells search engines the facts about your business in a format they read easily: your name, phone, service area, hours and type of business. It doesn't change how the page looks, and it helps Google connect your website to your business.

Choose the most specific type

Schema.org has specific types for many trades, including Electrician, Plumber, RoofingContractor, HousePainter, HVACBusiness and GeneralContractor. Use the most specific one that fits, or LocalBusiness if none does.

An example to edit

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Electrician",
  "name": "Smith Electrical",
  "url": "https://smithelectrical.com.au/",
  "telephone": "+61 400 000 000",
  "areaServed": ["Joondalup", "Wanneroo", "Clarkson"],
  "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 07:00-17:00",
  "priceRange": "$$"
}
</script>

Add an "address" block if customers visit your premises. Replace every value with your real details, and keep them identical to your Business Profile.

Where to put it

On your home page and contact page, in the page's head or body. WordPress SEO plugins such as Rank Math or Yoast can add it for you.

Test it

Paste your page address into Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator to check for errors.

What it won't do

Schema won't make a weak site rank on its own. It helps Google understand you. Content, reviews and links still do the heavy lifting. See the local SEO checklist.
