SEO for a new website: what to do in the first 90 days

A new website won't rank overnight. Google needs to find it, understand it and trust it. These first 90 days set the foundation so rankings arrive as fast as they can.

Launch week

  1. Set up Google Search Console and submit the sitemap. See our Search Console guide.
  2. Set up Google Analytics.
  3. Check every page has a unique title and heading.
  4. Make sure the site isn't blocking search engines. New sites sometimes launch with a "discourage search engines" setting still on.
  5. Link your Google Business Profile to the site.

Weeks 2 to 6

  • List your business on the main Australian directories. See citations.
  • Ask your first customers for Google reviews.
  • Check Search Console's Pages report to make sure your pages are being indexed.

Weeks 6 to 12

  • Add or improve service pages based on what Search Console shows.
  • Publish one or two useful articles answering customer questions.
  • Earn your first local links. See link building ideas.

Realistic expectations

In the first three months, expect impressions in Search Console to grow before clicks do. Map-pack movement often comes first; organic rankings for competitive terms usually take three to six months or more. See how long local SEO takes.
