How to write page titles and meta descriptions

The page title is the blue link people see in Google. It's one of the clearest signals of what a page is about, and it decides whether people click. The meta description is the short summary underneath.

Page title formula

Service + location | Business name

  • "Switchboard Upgrades Joondalup | Smith Electrical"
  • "Blocked Drains Wanneroo | ScottCare Plumbing"
  • "Roof Restoration Perth | Ace Roofing"

Title tips

  1. Give every page a unique title.
  2. Put the most important words first.
  3. Keep it to roughly 50 to 60 characters so it isn't cut off.
  4. Don't stuff it with every suburb.
  5. Never leave it as "Home" or "Untitled".

Meta description formula

What you do + a reason to choose you + a call to action, in about 150 characters.

"Licensed electrician for switchboard upgrades in Joondalup and nearby suburbs. Fixed quotes and same-week installs. Call for a free quote."

Google may rewrite them

Google sometimes shows different text if it thinks something else on the page matches the search better. Writing clear titles and descriptions makes that less likely.

Where to edit them

In WordPress, SEO plugins such as Rank Math or Yoast add fields for the title and description under each page.

See service pages that rank.
