12 questions to ask a web designer before you sign

Most website problems come from things nobody asked about at the start: who owns the site, who writes the content, and what happens after launch. Ask these before you sign.

Ownership and access

  1. Will the domain, hosting and website be in my name?
  2. Will I get full admin access when it's finished?
  3. What happens to my site if I stop paying you?

Results

  1. Can you show me sites you've built that rank on Google and bring in enquiries?
  2. Will each service and area I work in get its own page?
  3. Is basic SEO included: titles, headings, schema, speed, Search Console?

Process

  1. Who writes the copy and supplies photos?
  2. How many rounds of changes are included?
  3. What's the timeline, and what could delay it?
  4. If I have an existing site, how will you protect my current rankings?

After launch

  1. What are the ongoing costs: hosting, updates, support?
  2. Can I make simple updates myself?
