Small business website checklist: 25 things to check

Use this checklist on your current site or before you launch a new one. If you fix nothing else, fix the first section: a customer should know what you do, where, and how to contact you within five seconds.

First impressions

  • The headline says what you do and where.
  • A phone number is visible without scrolling on a phone.
  • There's one clear action, such as "Get a quote".
  • Real photos, not only stock images.

Content

  • A separate page for each main service.
  • Pages for your priority suburbs or service areas.
  • An about page with real names and faces.
  • Answers to common questions, including rough pricing.
  • Your service area, stated plainly.

Trust

Mobile and speed

  • Click-to-call works.
  • Forms are short and easy to fill in on a phone.
  • Pages load in about three seconds or less on mobile.
  • Text is readable without zooming.

SEO basics

  • Every page has a unique title with the service and location.
  • Every page has one clear heading.
  • Google Search Console is set up and the sitemap is submitted.
  • Images have descriptive alt text.
  • The site links to your Google Business Profile, and the details match.

Legal and admin

  • A privacy policy if you collect personal details.
  • The domain is registered in your name.
  • Backups and updates are happening.
